David's Story

David Simons Bio

I exhibited at my first show in 1979 at my local ag show at Nambour. Over the years I have kept quite a number of different breeds, primarily softfeather, with some hardfeather, and since 2000 waterfowl. I have kept Anconas in one form or another for just over 40 years. My wife Dejonn and I currently breed and exhibit Anconas in bantam rose comb, single comb, Red and Blue, and large and bantam Malays. Some of the past breeds that I had been most successful with over an extended period include large single comb and rose comb Anconas, bantam Black Minorcas, White Frizzle bantams, various colours in Belgians, Leghorn bantams and large Andalusians. In the waterfowl, we currently have Saxony bantams, Tufted Romans and Sebastopols, and in the past have had Muscovies and Khaki Campbells.

Rarer breeds and colour varieties of poultry are somewhat of a passion of mine, which is pretty obvious if I was to list all of the breeds and varieties I have kept over the years.

I started judging in 1991 and have had about 190 judging appointments throughout mainland Australia (except the NT), with most of these being in Queensland and New South Wales. I have had the honour of judging a number of capital city royals (Adelaide 5 times, Sydney 4 times, Brisbane 3 times plus again in 2025, Melbourne twice, Canberra once and Perth once), the National Poultry Show three times, the NSW State Show in 2024 and a number of specialist breed club shows. I also judged at the Tasmanian Rare Breeds Club show in 2023. I am an FCAQ open panel judge for softfeather, hardfeather, waterfowl and eggs.

I have had privilege of judging in Western Australia on several previous occasions – WA Poultry Expo 2000, Albany Poultry Club in 2014, Pekin Club of WA and Perth Royal both in 2022. I look forward to coming over to Western Australia again and judging at your 2025 State Show.
